It is the year 1622. The Virginia Colony, begun at Jamestown in 1607, continues to thrive in spite of great adversity. Villages and plantations have spread along the rivers and tributaries. Tobacco is already king , fueled by high demand in England and made economical by the free labor of indentured servants and the forced labor of African slaves. But the Colony is about to face its greatest peril. A determined foe, bent on revenge, resolves to wipe out every man, woman and child in one bold surprise attack.

William Hampton is one of the newer arrivals in Virginia, but in a few short years he has already established two plantations one just outside Elizabeth City where he lives with his wife and three children, and another in outlying Strawberry Bank where he has sequestered his mistress, Amber Claxton, and their infant son.

Description

The killing of an Indian who had murdered a white planter ignites dormant racial tensions. The chief of the Pamunkey tribe plots a coordinated attack against every village and plantation. It is scheduled for sunrise on Good Friday morning to catch the settlers defenseless.

But William Hampton discovers the plan and rides through the night in a desperate race against time to warn the scattered settlements. As flames rise up in the early morning light and Hampton discovers the carnage and corpses at plantations already hit by the marauding tribesman, he suddenly realizes that he may be too late to warn his own people at Strawberry Bank and rescue Amber and his son from a horrible death.

This is a tale of love and adventure set against the backdrop of the founding of a new nation. It is based on fact and written by a direct descendant of William Hampton. And it is a reminder that well before the Pilgrims founded their colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts, the Virginia Cavaliers had carved a foothold in the New World from which neither war nor epidemic could dislodge them.
